Walworth County Sheriff’s Press Release

On Sunday, March 30, 2014, approximately 3:55pm, Walworth County Sheriff arrested Christopher L. Mangold, age 40, of Lake Geneva WI.

At approximately 3:23pm, Geneva Township PD and Walworth County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a report of a domestic violence incident allegedly involving Mangold. Mangold was reported to be intoxicated and left the scene in a 2013 Cadillac ATS. An ATL (attempt to locate) was broadcast at this time.

At approximately 3:39pm, Officers spotted this vehicle in the city of Lake Geneva. A traffic stop was initiated, and the vehicle pulled over. However, it sped away before officers could approach the driver.

A pursuit was initiated, and Mangold is alleged to have been speeding at more than 100 miles per hour during portions of this pursuit. Five agencies (City of Lake Geneva PD, Town of Geneva PD, Town of Delavan PD, City of Elkhorn PD, Walworth County Sheriff) were involved in this pursuit at various points. Two sets of stop sticks were deployed which did deflate one of Mangold’s tires, but did not stop him from continuing to flee from law enforcement officers.

At approximately 3:55pm, Walworth County Sheriff deployed a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver, which is a maneuver whereby law enforcement intentionally makes contact with the alleged violator. This occurred on I-43 northbound at Hwy NN (north) in the city of Elkhorn. The PIT maneuver was successful, and the Cadillac struck the guardrail at this location and the pursuit ended. Both the squad car and the Cadillac sustained damage.

Mangold was taken into custody at the scene. Initial charges from this agency which will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office include: Felony Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting Arrest, Recklessly Endangering Safety, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated – 3rd offense. Other charges may be forthcoming from the other four municipalities as well.
